Constant Output 8: Caricature Attempt
I’ve always loved traditional caricatures and have even been hired to draw them for summer camps and fundraisers. I love the challenge of capturing someone's essence and am always so amazed when I can recognize the person being drawn in this exaggerated style. I wanted to give this a go with my polymer clay sculpting. I chose to try to do John Lennon because of his iconic and famous face, recognizable by almost anyone.
The features that stuck out to me were is prominent nose, small, gentle eyes, soft small lips, and round fluffy head of hair. I also studied his side profile.
Another reference image I used was this caricature:
This reinforced my original thoughts about the most prominent features. Now time to get sculpting.
First I deconstructed ole’ kombucha guy. Reduce, reuse, recycle!
I resecured my armature with the wire mesh and duck tape.
And here is my John Lennon (I don't know why all the photos from my phone look condensed when I put them here-its driving me crazy). I think I did alright. I can’t say I would be able to tell it's John Lennon just by looking at it, but maybe if I sculpted the other Beatles he would be more familiar in that context. I think I should've taken it easy with the eyebrows and maybe make the eyes a bit smaller.
This was much more challenging than I anticipated.
