Art Toy Design — Peg Doll
For the first project of my Art Toy Design class, I customized my very own peg doll. With an unfinished wooden peg doll as my blank canvas, I decided I wanted to turn it into a fairy mushroom pixie creature little guy. I drew inspiration from old folk dolls with an intricately detailed face on a smooth round surface.
I started with this little sketch of what I wanted to make. From there I started by laser cutting fairy wings on thin 1/8" acrylic.
I tried out a few sizes and decided 2" was the best. For the antennas, I bought a 1/8" clear acrylic cylinder and cut them down into 3/4" of an inch. To insert them into the head of my creature, I used a tiny drill bit and just went right into the head. I also drilled into the back of the peg doll to insert the wings. I made the little balls on top of the tube by using the mini drill press to drill into a small wooden dowel. I then used the band saw to slice the dowel up and sanded them to the best of my ability with the sandpaper available.
After a quick acrylic paint job, face illustration with a micron pen, and a clear gloss finishing spray I superglued the wings and antenna to the peg doll and called the little fella done. Yay!
